From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: My uncle Anas ibn Al-Nadr was absent at the battle of Badr. And he said: Oh Messenger of Allah, I was absent at the first battle you fought against the Idolaters; if Allah would have me be present to fight the Idolaters, truly Allah would see what I can do. On the day of Uhud, when the Muslims were overcome and fled, he said: Oh Allah! Truly I apologize to you for what these men have done (meaning his companions), and I denounce to you what these men have done (meaning the Idolaters). Then he went forward, and Sa’d ibn Mu’adh met up with him, and he said: Oh Sa’d ibn Mu’adh, Jannah! I swear by Al-Nadr’s Lord, indeed I can smell its aroma from in front of Uhud. Sa’d said: I was not able, oh Messenger of Allah, to do what he did. Anas said: We found on him eighty-something strikes from swords, stabs from lances, or pierces from arrows. And we found him to have been killed and brutalized by the Idolaters, and no one recognized him except his sister, by his fingertips. Anas said: We believed or reckoned that this verse came down regarding him and regarding those like him: { Among the Believers are men who were true to what they pledged to Allah } [Al-ahzab 23] until the end of the verse.
