{ Permission has been given to those who fight, because they have been oppressed; indeed Allah is truly able to give them victory } Al-hajj 39

{ Indeed Allah is truly able to give them victory } : and so He did. Indeed the Most High legislated jihad at the most suitable time for it, because when they were in Mecca, the Idolaters were more numerous, and if He had ordered the Muslims – who were less than a tenth – to fight the rest of them, this would have been very hard on them. … But when the Idolaters became oppressive, and drove the Prophet (SAW) from among them, and were intent on killing him, and forced his Companions out in all directions, a group of them went off to Ethiopia, and others to Medina. When they settled in Medina and the Messenger of Allah (SAW) showed up to meet them, and they all gathered together to support him, and this became a territory of Islam for them and a stronghold in which they could find refuge, then Allah legislated jihad against the enemies. This verse was the first to come down concerning this.
