The expositors say: Indeed the Muslims, when they saw what the Idolaters had done to their dead on the day of Uhud by way of ripping open bellies, cutting off male members, and savage mutilation, said when they saw this: If Allah Most High and Exalted gives us victory over them, surely we will do even more than they have done, and we will mutilate them like no Arab has ever mutilated another Arab, and indeed we will do this and we will do that. And the Messenger of Allah (SAW) stopped beside his uncle Hamza – they had cut off his nose and ears and severed his member and ripped open his belly. Hind bint ‘Utba had taken a piece of his liver, chewed it, gulped it down to eat it, but it would not stay in her belly so she threw it up. The Prophet of Allah (SAW) got word of this and He said: As for her, indeed if she had eaten it, she would never enter Hellfire; Hamza is too honorable to Allah for any part of his body to enter Hellfire. And when the Messenger of Allah (SAW) saw Hamza, He saw something more agonizing to his heart than anything He had ever seen, and He said: May the mercy of Allah be on you, indeed from what I know you were true to the ties of kinship, accomplished in good deeds, and were it not for the grief for you of those who remained after you, truly I would mutilate seventy of them in your place. But Allah Most High sent down: { But if you punish, then punish in the same way by which you have been punished } and the rest of the verse, and the Prophet (SAW) said: And so we will be forbearing. And He took back what He wished for, and made amends for what He swore.
