{ Indeed Allah has bought, from the Believers, their lives and their wealth, so that Jannah may be theirs; they fight in the cause of Allah, and kill and are killed, a promise of truth on Him in the Torah, the Injil, and the Qur’an. And who is more faithful to His covenant than Allah? So rejoice over the deal that you have pledged to; this is the great victory } Al-tawba 111
The Most High is making known to His servants the Believers that He compensates them for their lives and their wealth – whenever they sacrifice them in His cause – with Jannah. This comes out of His abundance, generosity, and goodness, for indeed He has accepted to compensate with what He already possesses, for what He has been gracious with towards His servants, those who are obedient to Him. For this reason Hasan Al-Basri and Qatada said: He has pledged to them, by Allah! And has raised their valuable price! And Shimr ibn ‘Atiyya said: There is no Muslim – I swear by Allah Mighty and Sublime – that does not have a deal on his neck which he either lives up to or dies in. Then he recited this verse. For this reason it is said that whoever undertakes to be part of the cause of Allah has pledged to Allah, that is, they have accepted this contract and have lived up to it. … { They fight in the cause of Allah, and kill and are killed } : that is, whether they kill or are killed, or both happen to them, Jannah is certainly theirs. … His word: { And who is more faithful to His covenant then Allah? } : indeed He does not go back on this promise, as His word says: { Who is truer than Allah in word? } [Al-nisaa 87], and: { Who is truer than Allah in speech? } [Al-nisaa 122]. Therefore then His word: { So rejoice over the deal that you have pledged to; this is the great victory } : that is, whoever has carried out the requirements of this contract, and has lived up to the covenant, let them rejoice in the great victory and the everlasting bliss.
