{ Oh Prophet! Wage jihad on the Disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be harsh to them; their dwelling is Hell, a miserable fate } Al-tawba 73

He (may His remembrance be exalted) is saying: Oh Prophet! Wage jihad on the Disbelievers with the sword and with weapons, and on the hypocrites. Expositors differ regarding the nature of jihad that Allah ordered His Prophet to wage on the hypocrites. Some of them say: He ordered him to wage jihad on them with the hand, with the tongue, and with anything by which He is capable of waging jihad on them. … Others say, rather, that He ordered him to wage jihad on them with words. … His word: { And be harsh to them } ; He (may His remembrance be exalted) is saying: And be severe against them with jihad, fighting, and terror.
