And when the Messenger of Allah (SAW) was at ease, Zainab bint Al-Harith, Sallam ibn Mishkam’s woman, presented him with a roast lamb. She had asked beforehand which part of the lamb the Messenger of Allah (SAW) liked best; they told her the shoulder, so she put extra poison in it, and then poisoned the rest of the lamb. Then she brought it out, and when she placed it before the Messenger of Allah (SAW), He reached for the shoulder, and chewed a bite of it, but did not swallow it. And Bishr ibn Al-Baraa ibn Ma’rur was with him, and took a piece like the Messenger of Allah (SAW) took, but Bishr swallowed it. And the Messenger of Allah (SAW) spit it out, then said: Indeed this bone tells me that it is poisoned. Then He called for her, and she confessed, and He said: What made you do this? She said: You are not unaware of what you have caused my people; I said: If he is a king, I will be rid of him, but if he is a prophet, it will be told to him. And the Messenger of Allah (SAW) let her be. And Bishr died from the meal he ate.
