‘Urwa related that ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) told him about the incident of the falsehood [regarding ‘Aishah], in which she said: Abu Ayub Al-Ansari was there when his woman told him about it, saying: Oh Abu Ayub, have you not heard what the people are talking about? He said: And what are they talking about? So she told him about what the people who spread the falsehood had said. And he said: It is not for us to talk of this; glorified are you! [i.e. Allah]; this is great slander. So Allah Mighty and Sublime sent down { Oh if you had only said, when you heard of it: it is not for us to talk of this. Glorified are you! This is great slander }
Dhakwan, the freed slave of ‘Aishah, related that he asked permission for Ibn ‘Abbas to go in to see ‘Aishah when she was dying, and her nephew Abdullah ibn ‘Abd Al-Rahman was with her. He said: Ibn ‘Abbas is here asking permission from you; he is one of your best sons. She said: Spare me Ibn ‘Abbas and his acclamation. But Abdallah ibn ‘Abd Al-Rahman said to her: Indeed he is a reciter of the Book of Allah Mighty and Sublime, a master of the deen of Allah the Exalted. Give him permission so he can greet you and bid you farewell. She said: Then give him permission if you wish. So he gave him permission, and Ibn ‘Abbas entered, then greeted her and sat down. He said: Be glad, oh Mother of the Believers! For I swear by Allah nothing now separates you from being free of all harm and distress (or he said toil) to meet the loved ones Muhammad (prayers and peace upon him) and his party (or he said his Companions), only that the spirit separates from the body. You were the most beloved of the wives of the Messenger of Allah (SAW) to him, and He only loved good things. Allah Most High sent down regarding your absolution from guilt from above seven heavens, and there is not a mosque on earth in which it is not recited through the hours of night and day. Your necklace fell off on the night of Al-Abwa’, and the Prophet (SAW) was detained at the campsite, and the people with him, intent on getting it (or he said looking for it), until morning came, and the people found themselves without water, and so Allah Most High sent down { And wipe with clean dust } [Al-nisaa 43]; this was a general allowance given to people because of you; and I swear by Allah truly you are blessed. And she said: Spare me all that, oh Ibn ‘Abbas; I swear by Allah I would have liked to have been disregarded and forgotten.
