A woman ought to be careful as much as possible about going out; even if she is safe from herself, people are not safe from her. If she is obliged to go out, she is to go out with her husband’s permission and with a shabby appearance, and she is to make her way through empty places, not streets or marketplaces. And she is to take precautions that her voice not be heard, and she is to walk on the side of the road, not in the middle of it. Isma’il ibn Ahmad informed us through his chain of narration, from Abu Huraira, who said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: The middle of the road is not for women.
