Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (or someone who related it from him) said: Halimah bint Abi Dhuwaib Al-Sa'diya, the mother of Allah's Messenger (SAW), the one who suckled him, related that she set out from her land with her husband and a young son of hers she was suckling, among a group of women from the Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr, seeking infants to breast feed. She said: This was in a year of scarcity when we didn't have anything left. … We came to Mecca seeking infants to breast feed, but every woman among us, when the Messenger of Allah (SAW) was presented to her, refused him when they were told that He was an orphan, since we were indeed hoping for some benevolence from the child's father. We said: An orphan?! What can his mother or grandfather possibly do? So we disliked him because of this. And no woman was left of those who had come with me that did not get an infant to suckle, except me. When we agreed to set out again, I said to my husband: I swear by Allah I really don't want to return among my women companions without having gotten an infant to suckle; I swear by Allah indeed I'll go to that orphan and I will take him. He said: You don't have to, but perhaps Allah will make in him a blessing for us. She said: So I went to him and took him, and nothing made me take him except that I could not find anyone else. She said: And when I took him, I returned with him to where my luggage was, and when I put him in my lap, my breasts presently became full of all the milk He wanted, and He drank until He was satisfied. … And when we brought him with us, my flock set out with me giving abundant milk. … And we did not cease to recognize this abundance and goodness as coming from Allah, until his first two years passed, and I weaned him. He grew into youth like no other boy, and when He reached two years of age He had filled out well. She continued: We brought him to his mother, but we were quite eager to have him stay with us, seeing his blessing, and so we talked with his mother, and I said to her: I wish you could leave my little son with me until He gets big and strong, for indeed I am most fearful for him with the plague in Mecca. She said: We did not let up with her until she sent him back with us; we went back with him, and I swear by Allah He was with his brother – a month after we returned – with some sheep of ours behind our houses, when his brother came hurriedly to us and said to me and his father: Two men in white garments took that Quraish brother of mine, threw him down, split open his belly, and are stirring it up. She said: So his father and I went out to him, and we found him standing up with his face discolored from dismay. She said: I embraced him and his father embraced him and we said to him: What's going on with you my son? He said: Two men in white garments came to me, threw me down, split open my belly, and searched for I don't know what inside of me. So we went back to our tent. She said: And his father said to me: Oh Halimah, did you fear that something came upon this boy? Cast him back to his family before it manifests in him. She said: So we took him and brought him to his mother, and she said: Why have you brought him, oh wet nurse? You were so eager for him to stay with you! She [Halimah] replied: Yes; Allah has brought my son to this point, and I have fulfilled my obligation; I have feared that something may happen to him, and so I have now brought him back to you as you desire. She said: What is the issue with you? Tell me the truth of what's going on. She [Halimah] said: And she didn't let up until I told her; she said: Did you fear that Satan had come upon him? She said: Yes. She said: No way! I swear by Allah there is no way Satan could come upon him; indeed my son is significant.
