‘Abd Al-Malik said: I became aware that Abdullah ibn ‘Umar beat his woman, Safiyah bint Abi ‘Ubaid, until he split her open [shajjaha, i.e. her face]. So the part of the Qur’an was brought down for beating them upon rebellion, wrongdoing, and going against the man's orders.
