{ Oh women of the Prophet, you all are not like any other woman; if you are devout then do not be acquiescent in speech, such that someone with sickness in his heart might be allured, but speak favorable words Be fixed in your houses, do not display your charms as in the age of ignorance, attend to prayer, give charity, and obey Allah and his Messenger; indeed Allah wants to rid you all of filth, people of the household, and purify you fully } Al-ahzab 32-33

These are manners that Allah Most High ordered the Prophet’s (SAW) women; and the women of the ummah to follow them in this. He said this addressing the Prophet’s (SAW) women to fear Allah as He ordered them; for indeed no woman resembles them nor matches them in virtue or status. Then He said { Do not be acquiescent in speech } . Al-Suddi and others said: By this He means gentleness in speech whenever they address men; and for this reason He said { Such that someone with sickness in his heart might be allured } : that is, aberration. { But speak favorable words } : Ibn Zaid said: Words that are pleasant and beautiful and favorable in goodness. The meaning of this is that she is to address marriageable relatives using words in which there is no softness, that is, a woman is not to address marriageable relatives as she addresses her husband.
His words { Be fixed in your houses } : that is, hold fast to your houses and do not come out for anything other than a need; and among the lawful needs are prayer in the mosque, in accordance with its conditions, as the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: Do not prohibit Allah’s mosques to Allah’s servant girls, but let them go out not being perfumed. And in another narration: Their houses are better for them.
… Qatada said regarding { Do not display your charms as in the age of ignorance } : Whenever you leave your houses. Women would have a way of walking and would be flashy and flirtatious, and Allah forbade this. Muqatil ibn Hayyan said regarding { Do not display your charms as in the age of ignorance } : The display of charms [tabarruj] is when a woman throws a linen over her head but does not secure it so that her necklaces and earrings and neck are covered, but instead all of this is showing on her.
