{ Your women are a tilth for you } : There are three recountings regarding the reason for this revelation. The first of them is that the Jews denied the permissibility of coming to women except from what they had between their hands [i.e. from the front], and they refused to come to them except in that manner; so this verse came down (narrated from Jabir, Al-Hasan, and Qatada). The second recounting is that a clan from the Quraish had been marrying women in Mecca and enjoying them from the front and from behind; and when they came to Medina they married from among the Ansar and set out to do the same. But the women refused, and the issue ended up reaching the Prophet (SAW), and so this verse came down (Mujahid narrated this from Ibn ‘Abbas). And the third recounting is that ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab came to the Prophet (SAW) and said: I am ruined! I turned my saddle over last night. And so this verse came down (Sa’id ibn Jubair narrated this from Ibn ‘Abbas). And “tilth” means the place of sowing. It is used here as an allusion to sex; women are called tilth because they are the place where children are sown, like the earth is given to cultivation.
