وقد زبر عمر رضي الله عنه امرأته لما راجعته وقال ما أنت إلا لعبة في جانب البيت إن كانت لنا اليك حاجة وإلا جلست كما أنت فإذاً فيهن شر وفيهن ضعف فالسياسة والخشونة علاج الشر والمطايبة والرحمة علاج الضعف فالطبيب الحاذق هو الذي يقدر العلاج بقدر الداء فلينظر الرجل أولاً إلى أخلاقها بالتجربة ثم ليعا ملها بما يصلحها كما يقتضيها حالها

‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) dismissed his woman when she came to him, saying: You are nothing but a toy on the side of the house; if we have need of you, fine, otherwise you sit as you were. In women, then, is evil and weakness. Diplomacy and bluntness are the treatment for evil; jest and mercy are the treatment for weakness. A skilled physician is one who assesses treatment in accordance with the ailment, so let a man first pay attention to a woman’s manners by examination, then treat her with what will correct her as her condition requires.
