Sulaiman ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-Ahwas related: My father told me that he had been at the farewell pilgrimage with the Messenger of Allah (SAW); He praised Allah and exalted him, and gave reminders and admonishments. Then He said: Treat women well, for truly they are submissive captives with you; you do not possess anything from them but this, except if they commit obvious indecency; if they do this, renounce them in bed and beat them with a beating that is not agonizing; then if they obey you, do not pursue any more regarding them; indeed you have rights over your women and your women have rights over you; your rights over your women are that they not let anyone who you dislike to tread on [i.e. dishonor] your beds, and to not give permission to anyone you dislike to enter your houses; and their rights over you are that you treat them well as regards their clothing and their food.
