The account is given of a woman called Mu’arbidah who was the most learned and knowledgeable of her time. It was asked of her: Oh wise one, where do womenfolk think? She said: Between the thighs. And it was asked of her: And desire? She said: In the same place. And it was asked of her: Where do women find the love of men or aversion to them? She said: In the same place. . . . And it was asked of her: Where do women find passion and discernment and delight and longing? She said: In the eye, the heart, and the vagina. And it was asked of her: Elaborate on that for us. And she said: Passion resides in the heart, discernment resides in the eye, and taste resides in the vagina. For whenever the eye looks at what is pleasant and finds it good, and marvels at its form and the beauty of its constitution, love for it pervades the heart, and then its sweetness is manifest apart from its bitterness by the woman’s sleekness and tactility; for a woman’s sleekness and tactility is her vagina, in which she discerns the pleasant from the ugly upon tasting it.
