‘Ammar ibn Yasir, whenever he heard what people said about the Messenger of Allah’s (SAW) marriage to Khadijah, and how they did this often, said: I know better than anyone about his marriage to her – indeed we are the same age and I was a confidant and intimate friend of his. And indeed, one day I set out with the Messenger of Allah (SAW) until when we were at Al-hazwara, we passed by Khadijah’s sister sitting on some tanned hides she was selling. She called out to me and I went over to her, and the Messenger of Allah (SAW) was waiting by. And she said: Doesn’t this companion of yours need to get married to Khadijah? ‘Ammar said: So I went back to him and told him. And He said: Yes of course, I swear by my life! And so I told her what the Messenger of Allah (SAW) had said, and she said: Come back to us tomorrow when we get up in the morning. So we went back to them the next day and found that they had slaughtered a cow and clothed Khadijah’s father in a full garment, and his beard had been dyed yellow. And she spoke with her brother and then he spoke to his father, and he was given fermented beverage [khamr] to drink. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) and his standing were mentioned to him, and he asked him to marry Him to her, and so he married Him to Khadijah. And they made a meal of the cow and we ate of it. Her father went to sleep and then woke up sober, and said: What is this garment?! And this wedding meal?! And this food?! His daughter – the one who had spoken with ‘Ammar – said to him: This is the garment that Muhammad ibn Abdullah, your son-in-law, dressed you with, and a cow he gave to you, which we slaughtered when you married him to Khadijah. But he denied that he had married him, and went out shouting until he reached the Hijr [near the Ka’ba]. And the Banu Hashim took the Messenger of Allah (SAW) away, and then came back to him and spoke to him. And he said: Where is your companion, the one who you all allege that I married to Khadijah? Then the Messenger of Allah (SAW) came out to him, and when he looked at Him, he said: If I have married him to her, then alright, but if I haven’t, then I hereby marry him to her now.
