Ibn ‘Abbas related, from what Hammad reckoned, that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) mentioned Khadijah; her father did not at all desire to marry him to her, so she prepared an event with food and drink, and invited her father and a group of the Quraish. They ate and drank until they got drunk, and then Khadijah said to her father: Indeed Muhammad ibn Abdullah has asked for my hand, so marry him to me. And he married him to her. Then Khadijah perfumed her father and dressed him in a full garment, such as was customarily done with the fathers. But when his drunkenness passed from him, he looked, and behold he was perfumed and had a full garment on, and he said: What is going on with me?! What is this? And she said: You have married me to Muhammad ibn Abdullah. He said: Me, marrying off Abu Talib’s orphan boy?! No, not by my life! But Khadijah said: Have you no shame? Do you want to make a fool of yourself with the Quraish? Tell people that you were drunk? And she did not let up from him until he consented.
