From Iyas ibn Abi Dhubab who said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: Do not beat Allah’s slave girls. Someone said: But the women have become conceited and spoiled their good manners around their husbands. ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab said: The women have become conceited and spoiled their good manners around their husbands ever since you prohibited beating them. The Prophet (SAW) said: So beat them then [fa-idribu]. And the people beat their women that night. Then many women came complaining about the beatings. And the Prophet (SAW) said when he arose in the morning: Last night seventy women went around to Muhammad’s household, each one of them complaining about the beatings, and I swear by Allah you will not find those ones to be the best among you.
