Indeed semen differs in its smell and taste. There is the thick and white kind, sweet, the smell of which is like the smell of camphor; this is the most agreeable to women and the fittest for a child. And there is the kind that is marbly and reddish, the smell of which is like tarnished copper with a bit of an offensive odor, albeit less. And there is the kind the smell of which is like aloe or myrrh, and women are averse to this; this is the kind that the womb twists and shrinks away from. The agreeability of the man to the woman is not attained except if his fluid is in agreement with her fluid in pleasantness or saltiness or bitterness. For if either of them is in disagreement with the other, they are both in disagreement. And this can be discerned when it spills on the ground: if ants and flies come near to it, then it is agreeable; otherwise, it is bitter.
