تفسير الرازي سورة النور "أما قوله تعالى يغضوا من أبصارهم ففيه مسائل" المسألة الثانية
{ Tell the believers to lower their looking } Al-nur 30
There are four kinds of nakedness [‘awrah]: the nakedness of a man with a man, the nakedness of a woman with a woman, the nakedness of a woman with a man, and the nakedness of a man with a woman. Concerning a man with a man, it is permissible for him to look at his entire body except his nakedness; his nakedness is what is between the navel and the knee. The navel and the knee are not nakedness. According to Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him), the knee is part of nakedness. Malik said that the thigh is not part of nakedness; however, the evidence that it is nakedness is what was narrated from Hanifa that the Prophet (SAW) passed by him in the mosque while his thigh was showing, and He (peace upon him) said: Cover your thigh. It is therefore part of nakedness. And He said to ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): Do not show your thigh, and do not look at another thigh, living or dead. And if there is desire when a man looks at another man’s face or the rest of his body, or there is fear of enticement because he is smooth and beardless [amrad], then it is not lawful for him to look at him.
