تفسير القرطبي
{ If We wanted to find amusement, We could find it from among Us, if We were to do that } Al-anbiyaa 17
Regarding the word of the Most High { If We had wanted to find amusement } , when people thought that He had a child, He said: If We had wanted to find amusement [lahw]. And lahw means woman in the language of Yemen; Qatada said this. ‘Uqba ibn Abi Jisra said, and Tawis and A’taa and Mujahid came to ask him about the word of the Most High { If we had wanted to find amusement } , and he said: Lahw means wife. And Al-Hasan and Ibn ‘Abbas said that lahw means child; Al-Hasan said this also. Al-Jawhari said: Perhaps lahw is an expression for sex. I said: That is where these words of Imru Al-Qais come from: "Have you not alleged today that I have become old and that those like me are not apt for lahw?" And indeed sex was referred to as amusement [lahw] because it is enjoyment to the heart, as Zuhair ibn Abi Sulma said: And in women is enjoyment for the righteous and a pleasant sight.
