From Ibn Shihab who said: ‘Aishah said: Khawlah bint Hakim, the woman of ‘Uthman ibn Madh’un, came to me looking frazzled, and I asked her about it, and she said that indeed her partner had taken to celibacy, fasting during the day and getting up at night. So ‘Aishah mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (SAW), and He sent for ‘Uthman and called him, saying: Oh ‘Uthman, certainly monastic life has not been ordained for us; Am I not a fine example for you? By Allah indeed I fear for you before Allah and I keep his lawful punishments; and let any man transgress who gives up sex with the women of his household.
