تفسير الزمخشري
{ … Renounce them in bed } Al-nisaa 34
A woman’s rebellion and rising up: her disobeying her husband and not being tranquil towards him, the origin of this being irritation. { In bed } : the places of rest; that is, do not engage with them under the covers, this being an allusion to sex. It is said: this is that he should turn his back to her in bed; and it is said: in the beds and in the houses that the women are settled in; in other words, do not come to them. It has been read as “in bed and where one lies down”; this is so that you may be aware of their condition and carry out the command concerning them in rebellion. He has ordered first an admonishing for them, then renouncing in bed, then a beating [darb] if the admonishing and renouncing have not been effective for them. It is said: the meaning here is compel them to have sex and tie them up as camels are tied, tightening the binding with a hijar; but this is commentary from uneducated people. Some have said: It is necessary for it to be a beating that is not severe, not wounding her, not breaking any bones, and avoiding the face. It is related from the Prophet (SAW), who said: Hang your whip where those of your household can see it (Ibn ‘Adi in Al-kamil).
