Ibn ‘Abbas said: People used to dislike facing the sky with their crotches, and their intercourse ceased; therefore Allah sent down this verse. Al-Bukhari related this from a narration of Ibn Juraij, in turn from Muhammad ibn ‘Abbad ibn Ja’far, that Ibn ‘Abbas recited “Indeed their breasts fold up”, and I said: Oh Abu ‘Abbas, what is “their breasts fold up”? He said: A man would have sex with his woman, but he would be bashful – or would go outside to do it – and he would be bashful, and so “Indeed they fold up their breasts” came down. In another account of this, Ibn ‘Abbas said: People were embarrassed to go out in the open and have sex with their women out in the open, so this came down concerning them.
