Abdullah ibn Al-Zubair got up in Mecca and said: Truly there are those who Allah has blinded their hearts as he has blinded their vision – they have issued a ruling for mut’a; and he was hinting at a certain man. But he [the man] called out to him and said: Indeed you are rude and coarse, for in my lifetime mut’a was done in the days of the Leader of the Devout. He meant the Messenger of Allah (SAW). And Ibn Al-Zubair said to him: Try it yourself, for I swear by Allah if you do it I will stone you with your stones. Ibn Shihab said: Khalid ibn Al-Muhajir ibn SaifAllah told me that while he was sitting with someone, someone else came to him to ask his ruling on mut’a, and he ordered him to have it. Then Ibn Abi ‘Amra Al-Ansari said to him: Easy now. He said: By Allah it was something that was done in the days of the Leader of the Devout. Ibn Abi ‘Amra said: It was authorized in the beginning of Islam for whoever was forced by necessity to do it, as with dead meat or blood or pork, and then Allah firmly established the deen and forbade it. Ibn Shihab said: And Rabi’ ibn Samra Al-Juhani told me that his father said: I enjoyed a woman from Banu ‘Amir during the time of the Messenger of Allah (SAW) for two red garments, then the Messenger of Allah (SAW) forbade us to have mut’a.
